The Benefit of Nurse-Administered IV Therapy

Mobile IV Therapy

As IV drip therapy gains in popularity, new businesses are popping up, but safe and reasonable regulations are only just starting to catch up. As a result, anyone can own an IV therapy business, and the services can be offered by providers whose training included some basics about intravenous (i.e., IV) administration. However, to be truly safe, appropriate, and effective, IV drip therapy is best administered by a professional with a Bachelor’s in Nursing Science (BSN).

Understanding the BSN Difference

Registered nurses with a BSN have received a four-year degree with significant training and clinical experience. In addition to IV technique, RNs with a BSN have been trained to assess complications and intervene appropriately in the event that something doesn’t go as planned.

In contrast, EMT’s need a GED and just 110 hours of training, which can be completed in 2 to 6 months. Clinical technicians, such as phlebotomists (technicians certified to draw blood), can obtain a certification with as little as 8 weeks of training through a certificate program. Finally, nurses with an Associate Degree in Nursing Science (ASN) can complete their program in 2 years. Simply put, you have a better chance of receiving top-notch care from a BSN.

The Proper IV Therapy Approach

IV drip therapy can be administered for a number of reasons, but the goal should be the improvement of health and wellness. To reach this goal, it’s important to look at the whole individual, and truly understand the medical risks that might be involved. For example, some medications might have a negative interaction with the iv drip therapy, and some people have conditions that might be triggered by IV therapy. In addition, the actual IV insertion process requires refined technique to be safe and effective. A BSN is trained to properly screen for potential issues as well as in advanced techniques for IV insertion, and, should something arise, a BSN is trained to assess and intervene to provide the best possible outcome.
